Here, the ice won't wait... Where can you go ice fishing in Haut-Richelieu?

How to plan a day of ice fishing with family or friends?

In Montérégie, we welcome you to Haut-Richelieu. Here in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and throughout the region, winter is a given. It sometimes arrives quickly, offering up its most beautiful playgrounds... then leaves without warning. Ice fishing is one of those winter activities that is closely linked to weather conditions, ice thickness, and safety. When everything aligns, you have to seize the moment, keep an eye on our businesses' Facebook pages, and get started! This winter pleasure is usually available for a very short time, from January to February...March.

Every year, the ice fishing season takes us by surprise. Short, unpredictable, but oh so precious for those who take the time to plan for it.

A winter activity that brings us closer together

Here, ice fishing is a tradition. It’s a simple, accessible activity that brings people together, often enjoyed as a family. For many children, it’s their first fishing experience. For parents, it’s an opportunity to slow down, spend time outdoors, and create memories without any fuss.

The turnkey package offered by local outfitters makes the experience easier. The cabin is often set up and heated, equipment is provided, and advice is readily available. All that's left to do is settle in, drill a hole in the ice, and enjoy the moment.

Venise-en-Québec and Clarenceville: Lake Champlain is the destination at the heart of the action

When conditions permit, ice fishing is mainly practiced near Venise-en-Québec and Clarenceville, on Lake Champlain. These areas are known for their accessibility and for the presence of well-established businesses that are familiar with the lake and its winter conditions.

Safety is always the top priority. Conditions can change quickly, and the season depends entirely on ice conditions. That's why it's essential to contact outfitters before traveling, whether to get information, make reservations, or confirm access.

Please note that mountain bikes are often welcome, depending on the time of year and the thickness of the ice. Again, a quick phone call will help you avoid any unpleasant surprises.

How to prepare for a day on the ice

Before setting out, it is always advisable to confirm ice conditions, access routes, schedules, and services offered. Ice fishing is an activity where up-to-date information makes all the difference.

Even though the experience is often turnkey, a few preparations can help maximize the fun. It is recommended to dress warmly, favoring layered clothing, waterproof boots, and spare accessories, especially with children. Snacks and hot drinks are always welcome.

Many restaurants and bars in the area will be delighted to welcome you and round off your getaway with us. Check out our section to book a table with your friends or family!

Winter, a season not to be missed

Ice fishing cannot be improvised at the last minute. The season can be short and availability limited when conditions are ideal. Planning now ensures you can enjoy it at the right time.

Here, when the ice is there, we know it. And we don't wait too long before booking our schedule.
