The city of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is located on the shores of the Richelieu River and is a favourite destination for water sports. Several cycling paths, three of which are part of the Route verte, cross the surrounding countryside, where agro-tourism is in the spotlight. Vieux-Saint-Jean offers many attractions for visitors and residents alike—summer animation on the public square, a marina, restaurants, theatres, a museum, art, cinema, public market, culture, heritage and history. Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu has a unique architectural heritage which offers audio-guided tours of great interest to architecture and history buffs. Throughout August, the Capital of hot air balloons hosts the prestigious International de Montgolfières of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, the largest gathering of hot air balloons in Canada.
