Exhibition on Joséphine Marchand

From June 5 to October 5, the Musée du Haut-Richelieu presents the temporary exhibition Joséphine Marchand: L'étincelle d'une émancipation culturelle féminine. Discover the life and career of a woman who profoundly influenced her era and the region. The vernissage takes place on June 5, starting at 5 p.m.

A woman of influence

Born in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, the subject of the exhibition, Joséphine Marchand was a true pioneer. She dedicated herself to promoting reading, culture and education for French-Canadian women. Her voice was heard at the Conseil national des femmes. She co-founded the Fédération nationale Saint-Jean-Baptiste and represented our country at the Paris World's Fair.

A philanthropist at heart, she created the Œuvre des livres gratuits. This innovative program brought reading to the remotest corners of Quebec. She also launched the very first magazine for French-Canadian women. Joséphine Marchand also published several plays, including La Carte Postale, revived (in audio version) by the Théâtre du Grand Pré.

This exhibition is a vibrant tribute to a woman who inspired and transformed society. Here, we shine the spotlight on the key figures in our local history. It's an opportunity to create a strong link with our past, to value the heritage of those who have shaped our region, and to touch the hearts of our visitors.
